1. My son wanted sunflowers in our veggie patch so we got 2 kinds of seeds and grew some that were ft. tall on the north edge, and another kind that's about 3 ft. tall at the bottom (south side) of those. Ants are farming aphids on them but not on any other veggie plants. The sunflowers have performed beautifully and we will have thousands of.

They also are very caring towards each other as they share each stomach load of food with at least one other ant through a process of regurgitation.

3. I have loved the rain and the cool weather we have had. So, here is my problem. I have lettuce and spinach that I have been harvesting for about 5 weeks. I have never had such a good crop of lettuce or spinach in Oklahoma. They look great and are happy. Unfortunately, the ants have decided to deposit aphids on my lettuce. I usually can deal.

7. May 17,  · The ants stimulate the release of honeydew by tapping on the aphids with their antennae. This is called milking. The Ants tend to their Aphid herd quite fastidiously. When the aphids have depleted the host plant of nutrients, the Aphid-herding Ants move them to a new host. Some Ants even care for the aphids over winter, transporting aphid eggs.

9. A symbiotic relationship is the one in which organisms live in close association to lead their life cycle. The organisms may either receive benefit or harm for this association. A mutualistic relationship is the one where both associating organisms receives the benefit. Here, the ants and aphids both species receives the benefit of association.
